Prof. Ghada El-Mahdy: An Esteemed Civil and Environmental Engineering Leader
Prof. Ghada El-Mahdy is a distinguished expert in civil and structural engineering, with a career spanning over three decades. Graduating with honors from Ain Shams University in 1988 with a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering, she furthered her academic journey in Canada, where she earned her M.A.Sc. in Civil Engineering (1992) and her Ph.D. in Structural Stability (1997) from the University of Windsor, Ontario.
A Career of Global Impact
Prof. El-Mahdy began her career as a structural engineer at Arab Consulting Engineers before moving to Canada for advanced studies. Upon returning to Egypt in 1997, she resumed her role at Arab Consulting Engineers and then transitioned to the Housing and Building National Research Center (HBRC), where her expertise contributed significantly to Egypt’s structural engineering field.
Her career took an international turn in 2003 when she joined the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations in New York as Chief of Unit in the Engineering Section. This was followed by her work in the Alberta oil and gas industry, where she became a licensed professional engineer in 2006. She also played a vital role in the UNOPS-UNICEF schools reconstruction project in Indonesia after the 2004 Tsunami.
Academic and Professional Excellence
In 2009, Prof. El-Mahdy returned to Egypt, ascending to the position of Research Professor at HBRC. During her time at HBRC, she contributed to the Egyptian Code of Practice for steel bridge design, edited scientific journals, and authored design aids for steel structures.
Prof. El-Mahdy began her academic teaching career in 2010 and has been a part of the British University in Egypt (BUE) since 2015, where she became a full-time professor in 2018 and served as Head of the Civil Engineering Department from 2020 to 2023.
