Professor Karen Elliott – A Visionary Leader in FinTech and Ethical Digital Innovation

Professor Karen Elliott is a distinguished Chair and Full Professor in Finance and FinTech at the University of Birmingham Business School, where she also serves as Co-Director of the FinTech MSc Degree Programme. Recognized as one of the Top 35 Women in FinTech Powerlist by Innovate Finance for Policy and Governance (2019-2021) and a judge for the 2023/24 edition, Karen plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of financial services and technology.

Her impact extends to multiple high-profile initiatives, including serving as Director of the UKFin Network+, the Hub for Responsible Growth: ESG and Sustainability, and leading the Strablib.ai project with Stratiphy. She also co-directs INFINITY Hub, a ÂŁ12M EPSRC/Innovate UK/Research England initiative focused on ethical AI, blockchain, and machine learning applications. Notably, she co-led Finclusion, a Gates Foundation and Turing Institute-backed project utilizing blockchain to verify credentials for vulnerable communities.

Before academia, Karen amassed extensive experience in project, risk, and change management across public, private, and voluntary sectors. Her expertise is widely published in prestigious international journals, including IEEE, ACM, IJOPM, and Springer Nature, and she serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Entrepreneurship in Emerging Economies (JEEE). She actively reviews for UKRI grants and advises on FCA sandboxes and tech sprints.

Karen’s thought leadership extends to ethical AI and sustainability as a core member of The IEEE Planet Positive Directive, contributing to global technology standards (IEEE P7000™ series). She also advises leading FinTech firms—including Incuto, Saible, Legacy Compass, and Irmai—and holds strategic positions on the Digital Advisory Board for The Centre for the New Midlands and Browne Jacobson ESG SIG.

Beyond academia, Karen is a Prime Minister’s Champions Group for Dementia member, an Impact Adviser to We Are Group, and a Fellow of ZincVC and FRSA. With a unique fusion of academic, commercial, and social insights, she drives responsible digital transformation while advocating for an equitable and sustainable digital society.
